I've
still got Cedega running World of Warcraft rather nicely, and
my husband's experiments have finally turned fruitful. Since he has a much newer
ATI card than I do, it was worth his while to track down the new 2.6 ATI drivers. He had to do some serious fussing to get it to work (he's going to post a breakdown to the Cedega forums,
I'll add a link here once he does) but he's now got
WoW running beautifully under Linux. Oddly, the Direct3D version works better for him than the OpenGL version. I don't think he'll be rebooting into Windows for a while!
Enthused by his hard-won success, Rob decided to try
Doom III under Linux, which he hadn't been able to get working before. Unfortunately, he's finding this much harder to get working than WoW. Even with the new ATI drivers properly installed the game won't launch, perhaps answering the question of why Cedega also supports Doom III (given that there's a native Linux version of the game). Disappointing stuff.
Yes, yes, I know that some people will start sneering and saying that if we had
nVidia cards we wouldn't have this problem. However, there are lots of people moving to Linux, and I'm sure a lot of them already have ATI cards they don't see the reason to replace. Let's get some perspective, folks!
