Survival through Freelancing

In an economy when even people at apparently healthy companies aren't foolish for worrying about their jobs, having the skills to be able to find contracts on the go is a necessity. As much as adrenaline may demand immediately searching for a full-time position (and I'm not saying this is a bad thing) you can take some of the pressure off by finding shorter term work which will at least slow down the depletion of what cash you have saved up. The less pressure to get a full-time position NOW, the more you can look for something that really suits you. Of course, another way to do this is to take some significant but "less than ideal" part-time work in the name of "it puts food on the table," but leave yourself enough time for job-hunting as a second job.

I personally find that taking things into my own hands, grabbing some work so that I have something, helps against that powerless feeling you get when you find yourself suddenly jobless. You may not be able to stop the loss, but you can hit the ground running.
