Spore for the Mac

posted Monday, 1 September 2008

I'm trying to decide if I'm excited that Spore is being released on September 7. When they released the Spore Creature Creator they only released the Windows version, and took over a month to get out the Mac version (of course, no Linux version at all). That seriously dampened any excitement for me for a while, especially since they were having a contest and the Mac users were hamstrung by having far less creature parts to use for all of that time. Now there's a patch for the Creature Creator which, again, is only available for Windows users.

For the Creature Creator I paid very close attention, wanting to get it when it was released. For Spore itself I'm not going to bother, as I'm not expecting a Mac version will be immediately available. I'm certainly not going to pre-order something that I don't trust will be available when it's supposed to.

They're offering a "pre-load" feature for Windows where the software is downloaded but only available to play at official release time. Guess what, that's not available for the Mac either. Funny thing is the people I know who are the most excited about Spore coming are Mac folks. Way to jerk around your fans, guys.

Mind you, I wouldn't have been as annoyed if there had been some explanation of why it took so long to put out the Creature Creator. For companies that are good at building buzz, why are so many of them horrible at real communication with their fan base?

How was I wrong? I still can't purchase the Mac version. There's a PC/Mac box but I have to wonder what's on it for the Mac, as there's no download version for the Mac available.

This is a case where I wouldn't really mind being wrong.
