Coolest Linux Stuff

posted Monday, 2 April 2007

I'm looking for ultra cool Linux things to do to entice people to try Linux. So they can't be uber-geek, it has to be something that a newbie could accomplish (with help, that's fine) ... something that would make them go "that's it, I have to try Linux."

Any favorites?

How about installing a WinXP drive inside VMWare server, whacking Office on it, then have your pal come in, and just as they're thinking "Well, this is what I do at work all day, what's so special?", hit Ctrl+Alt to un-maximise the Windows box and push it out of the way :D Then you could crack open Open-Office and carry on working, occasionally hopping back to the Windows install for one reason or another, all the while showing off the gorgeous (albeit a touch unnecessary) effects that Beryl and co. provide.

I know I'd walk away impressed.

And another thing you could do is show off the huge range of software that can be grabbed from the repos via the GUI. I prefer to use the console but I can see how the GUI for apt-get and the like would really impress anyone.
