Some Changes Around Here

posted Thursday, 7 December 2006

I've been quiet lately. My apologies. Most of the silence is from my being a bit unsure where I was going, but now that I'm there, it's time to settle in and get comfy.

I've actually taken a full-time position! Those who know me are probably pretty shocked, I've been freelancing for twelve years and having a lot of fun at it. But now I'm ready to settle down some and came across a job that sounded just as fun and even more rewarding. One of those things where the more you learn about what you'd be doing, the more you keep going, "This is for me!"

So, I'm know the Splunk Base Knowledge Manager for Splunk. I'm taking a break from articles for the moment and focusing on this new position. I am updating one of my books, though, so I haven't totally left the writing world.

You may be asking what in the heck Splunk is. It's "the search engine for IT data" of course. Well, okay, it's a tool for indexing all of your logs and IT data and making it searchable in real-time in really interesting and cool ways. If you use Splunk already or go to check it out, I'd love to hear what you think, especially about the SplunkBase component. SplunkBase is a wiki where you can enter explanations of the many log events that exist in the IT world, or refinements of the explanations that are already there. You can also submit your own events (be sure to alter any information that might make it easy for hackers to figure out your site or reveal other things the world shouldn't see, fortunately Splunk offers a button to help do that) as code examples.

That might be as clear as mud, but there it is. :) I'll be making some changes to this blog to reflect my new job, though I may still keep blogging about Linux and games and whatnot as well. After all, my interest in that hasn't changed.
